Only some people are creative and the rest of the world accepts it. Marcus Yallow from Cory Doctorow's Little Brother was creative because he used the X-net to communicate and enhance his learning ability. He also figured out that it was secure from the DHS monitoring systems. Winston Smith from George Orwell's 1984 was creative in his own way. He was controlled by the Inner Party and Big Brother, but wasn't always sure that the government was the only way of living. He would write in his diary about whatever came to his mind. In both of these novels the authors have taught society that if they just lay around and don't question decisions once in awhile then total control will engulf everyone. Cory Doctorow's Little Brother and George Orwell's 1984 have taught society not to let technology take over life, technology will always control an aspect of life, and to challenge the system when it is necessary.
Getting online is an everyday activity for most Americans. Some people get online all day, every day, and make websites to better our lives. With how often people use technology, it seems like technology has taken over their life . In George Orwell's 1984, Winston was controlled by Big brother and the telescreens throughout his adventure. The telescreens were in everyone’s home, like today’s television, but couldn't be turned off. If we installed telescreens in every persons home, people probably wouldn't notice anything different until the government started to control what society watched or learned. The DHS in Cory Doctorow's Little Brother did just that. The DHS monitored most of the sources of information, except for the X-Net, which was what Marcus used to communicate with his counterparts. Marcus and his friends rebelled against the DHS because they didn't like its type of government, just like most teenagers do today. What society has learned from this is that people are following in the footsteps of these two books and need to not let technology take over life.
Technology is defined as something to better the way of life. Society has altered the definition because when people think of technology they think of iPods or cell phones. An object that requires electricity to run. Technology will always play a role in society whether it is electrical or with a strange invention like the Snuggie . In 1984, telescreens were supposed to help everyone and keep everyone safe by monitoring them At all times, and telling them what was right or wrong. The internet does this in present day and people believe most of what is given to them just like most people in 1984 and the telescreen. Little Brother has the same principles as 1984 technology except for using a telescreen in a home, it was used as a monitoring system to make sure people were not taking any illegal actions. Society does this today with the Patriot Act except to a lesser extent. People have not realized that letting technology in our lives is not always a good idea.
Taking a candy bar is never a good thing to do but to do it you are seeing whether the stores security is any good and can catch you. Challenging the system is as easy as that. The same principles go into robbing a bank or rebelling against the government. Marcus Yallow from Cory Doctorow’s Little Brother rebelled against the government because he found injustice when the government kept his friend hostage longer than everyone else. Marcus challenged the system by battling the DHS for the release of his friend. As a society today, people need to keep the higher authorities in check and make sure that they aren’t holding unnecessary charges against innocent people. Winston Smith from George Orwell’s 1984 challenged the system and succeeded. He used his mind a lot to think about Julia, his lover, and thinking about anything other than the party was strictly forbidden. The Thought Police never caught him thinking about Julia and he never was in trouble. People today are doing the similar activities and are never getting caught. Like people who illegally download music. The government is suppose to monitor who does what on the internet and millions of people are getting away with stealing music from people but until someone does something about it people will think it’s fine.
Little Brother by Cory Doctorow and 1984 by George Orwell have taught society not to let technology take over life, technology will always control an aspect of life, and to challenge the system when it is necessary. Technology has taken over most of every persons life but some people are free from technologies grasp so they have learned from 1984 and Little Brother. Technology will always control an aspect of life because technology betters human life but whether society uses good technology is up to everyone else. Challenging the system is also something that 1984 and Little Brother have taught society to ponder on and if it is the right idea to use.
